The monopoly energy companies in Texas that used to be the only option when picking a Texas electrical provider are no longer the price leaders they once were. There are now over 40 different energy providers to choose from besides TXU Energy and Reliant Electricity Company. We have been checking in on Reliant Energy and TXU over the last year and their electric rates keep showing up near the bottom of the price comparison chart when comparing their electricity rates with several others. The state has a website called www.powertochoose.com which is a very helpful way to compare multiple electric company rates in Texas just by entering a zip code in the Texas area you need to compare. Right now there are 5 areas in Texas that are priced differently. For instance, in Houston electricity rates are going to be a little higher than they are in Dallas no matter what Texas electric company you choose. Reliant Energy and TXU are now offering unique rate plans such as a market tracker rate that follows the price of natural gas or longer term energy contracts that are reasonably cheap that other Texas electricity companies just are not offering. By taking on the cheap electric rate issue by advertising new and unique plans Reliant and TXU plan to continue to renew current customers as well as take valuable customers away from their competitors. Reliant Energy is aggressively trying to take away TXU Energy's customers in the Oncor utility area with billboard ads, feet on the street, and television commercials. The feet on the street has worked very well as many people know who Reliant Energy is and are willing to switch if they will be given an incentive like a $50 bill credit and a cheaper rate over TXU Energy. TXU Energy however is doing exactly what Reliant Energy is doing in their territory. This battle between these two large electricity companies has their concentration on mainly their customers only and not the small electric providers. The smaller electricity companies are doing one of two things. A few of them are advertising a terrible priced electricity rate by making it look better than it really is. Some of these energy companies will not mention that there are also TDSP charges that will be added to the rate. When the customer gets their first electric bill from this energy company they notice they are paying about 4 cents a kWh extra on top of the rate. Fortunately most of the smaller electricity companies deal more honestly then this but there are a few electric companies out there that do this and we warn Texas energy consumers to watch out for this tactic. |
