Some of you might have flown into a passion when in a very essential moment when you were working or expecting a vital e-message, your laptop went dead, as its battery had discharged. In such cases the battery should be replaced or re-charged. Laptop batteries are of three kinds - Nickel Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Ion (LiON). They vary in price, weight and specific characteristics. Nonetheless, the charging procedures have much in common. The charging time for brand new batteries should not be less than 14-16 hours. If you want to re-charge old ones, at first let them cool off, since overcharging can greatly decrease their life. If you buy NiMH laptop batteries, remember they have the so-called "memory effect". Thus, if a battery is not completely discharged, it will "think" that it has, for example 50% of its original capacity, and will use only this 50 percent, thus decreasing the number of hours during which your laptop function properly. Batteries are re-charged in different ways. The first way is when you use AC power. The so-called "trickle charge" automatically re-charges batteries as soon as a laptop is unplugged. The second option is by using an external battery charger. Batteries are inserted into a charger that is plugged into an outlet. Batteries' life can also be prolonged if: - you fully charge and discharge laptop batteries; - you have only those programs on at a time that you really need. Downloading music, searching on the Internet, chatting on-line along with using other programs can make laptop batteries' life much shorter. - you use batteries' energy wisely; - you defragment the hard disk now and then, as it saves space and, therefore, power; - you make adjustments to screen brightness; - you make use of cooling devices (available on the market) for the laptop temperature to comply with the established requirements; - you make use of AC adapters whenever it is possible. No doubt, it is strongly recommended to exploit a laptop as well as its diverse power sources in line with the safety requirements to insure your laptop will serve you longer. |
